How I became a model – and how you can become one too!

July 9, 2017

Is your dream to travel the world and do think you have what it takes to be a model? Go for it! Most of the agencies are always on the lookout for the next upcoming star. You can be the next! This is the story of how I became a model:

I was scouted on Instagram when I was 14 . At first I didn’t really realize that it was a big deal; I did a few shoots but waited till I was 17 and graduated highschool. School is more important, keep that in mind! While I was shopping in the streets of London a guy ran after me and grabbed my arm. He asked me if I was a mode and invited me to come and visit his agency. I visited the agency the day after and since then I am signed with Wilhelmina London and New York. From that moment I started modeling fulltime and everything went like a rollercoaster. I travelled to a lot of beautiful cities the in last two year and I’m really grateful that my job makes me able to do this.

Not everyone is going to be scouted on Instagram or on the street, this is why I’m explaining how to apply! What do you have to loose, right?

First you need to be aware of a few things: the sizes that are required, for example. You need to fit in a size 34/36 and be at least 175cm tall. Unfortunately these sizes are really strict, if you don’t fit in these sizes, you won’t be able to fit in the clothes, so you won’t be signed at an agency.

It’s time to do some research! Find agencies that are located in the city where you are based, this is the most convenient if they are going to be your ‘motheragency’. You can find the top ranked agencies at www.models.com. Or you can search in magazines or on Instagram where the models you like are signed. Be careful, not all agencies are that good.

Before you are able to apply you need to make some natural polaroids. You can just make these with your phone, because they have a really good camera these days. Wear a black bikini, heels and no makeup, this is how you make the best ones. Try to find a plain white wall and the best light (could be against a window or even outside). Here are a few example of my polaroids.

When they invite you for a casting, congrats! You passed the first step, now it’s all about presenting yourself. Personality is key, it’s definitely not only about the looks. Sit up straight and be able to express yourself, don’t be shy. They are possibly going to make some snaps of you at the agency, so practice some expressions at home in the mirror in order to be prepared.

If they like you and offer you a contract, read it first a couple times before signing it. It’s for a couple of years and you don’t want to be stuck in something you don’t want.

I hope these tips were helpful and I wish you guys the best of luck!

Lots of Love,

Demi
